Short video description
When Mark Felt last wrote for publication in the mids, he still was hiding his identity as Deep Throat. Since then, his memories of the period have almost entirely faded. As a consequence, he has never revealed three important aspects of his story: why he initiated his high-stakes garage meetings with Washington Post writer Bob Woodward, how he planned and managed those meetings and how he escaped detection at the FBI. With the help of his formerly secret files and interviews with his family and colleagues, I have reconstructed below, to the extent possible, his operational strategies. A generation later, Mark Felt's operation to expose the Nixon administration's crimes stands out as bold, if not foolhardy.

Deep Throat (Watergate) - Wikipedia

WITH the anniversary of Watergate approaching, one question about the affair remains as haunting today as it was at the time: Who was Deep Throat, the mysterious source within the federal government who repeatedly met The Washington Post's Bob Woodward in a parking garage in the early morning hours to guide the Post's inquiries into the scandal, to pass on information about the federal investigation, and to thwart the Nixon Administration's efforts to rein in that investigation? The identity of Deep Throat remains a subject of intense public curiosity. A recent book about Watergate, Silent Coup, by Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, shot to the top of best-seller lists in large part because of its speculation the authors admitted they had no proof that Alexander Haig, who was Henry Kissinger's deputy at the National Security Council at the time of the break-in, was at one point Woodward's prime source. Over the years countless other recognizable names within the Nixon White House have figured in the speculation. Beyond mere curiosity, the answer to the question is of considerable historical interest. Identifying Deep Throat would clarify our view of the Nixon Administration and would enhance our understanding of the underlying institutional forces at work in Washington during the late s and early s.

A new cinematic depiction of Mark Felt, the former associate director of the FBI better known as the informant Deep Throat , is ringing true with at least one person closely familiar with the story. But the film shows Felt meeting more often with TIME reporter Sandy Smith, who also covered the Watergate investigation — and whose reporting also contributed to the story. Mark Felt writer and director Peter Landesman said he made the decision not to focus on the better known reporting work of Woodward and Bernstein so that he could step back from the prevailing Watergate narrative.
